Everything to check before you buy 235/55 R18 tyres in the UAE: what the numbers mean, which cars use the size, how prices compare across brands and when it is time to replace them.
01What does 235/55 R18 mean?
The size is moulded on the sidewall of every tyre. Read it left to right:
- 235 is the section width in millimetres, measured from sidewall to sidewall.
- 55 is the aspect ratio. The sidewall is 55% as tall as the tyre is wide, about 129 mm.
- R means radial construction, used on almost every modern car tyre.
- 18 is the wheel (rim) diameter in inches.
The overall diameter works out at roughly 715 mm, which means about 2,246 mm of road covered per wheel turn. After the size you will also see a load index and speed rating (for example 94Y). Always match or exceed the ratings printed on your car’s door-jamb placard.
02Which cars use 235/55 R18?
Manufacturer fitment data lists 235/55 R18 as a factory size on 1 model from Kia. It is often one of several wheel options, so the right size for your car depends on its year and trim.

04Premium, mid-range or value?
Premium
Premium brands invest most in compounds and testing. They typically give shorter wet braking distances, a quieter ride and longer tread life, which matters on long UAE highway runs at sustained high speed.
Mid-range
Mid-range brands often share technology with premium makers and suit most daily drivers who want good grip without paying the top price.
Value
Value brands are a sensible choice for lower-mileage cars and city driving. Check the year of manufacture and warranty shown on each product before you choose.
05Load index and speed rating
The load index is the maximum weight each tyre can carry; the speed rating is the maximum sustained speed.
The most common ratings among the 235/55 R18 tyres we list:
- 100V: up to 800 kg per tyre and 240 km/h.
- 104V: up to 900 kg per tyre and 240 km/h.
- 104W: up to 900 kg per tyre and 270 km/h.
- 100H: up to 800 kg per tyre and 210 km/h.
- XL (extra load): a reinforced construction that carries more weight at a higher pressure.
- H, V, W and Y: speed ratings of 210, 240, 270 and 300 km/h.
- Run-flat: lets you keep driving a short distance after a puncture. Only fit run-flats if your car was designed for them.
06When to replace your tyres
- The tread is worn close to the wear indicator bars in the main grooves (the bars sit at 1.6 mm; wet grip drops noticeably below about 3 mm).
- You can see cracks, bulges or cuts on the sidewall.
- The tyres are several years old. Heat ages rubber faster, so check the four-digit date code (week and year) on the sidewall.
- You feel vibration, pulling or more road noise than usual.
Not sure? Send us a photo of your tyres on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether they need replacing.
